In the new TV series, the Doctor meets the last Dalek, which is a
museum exhibit in a private gallery near Salt Lake City, Utah.
Aside from
the fact that we know it couldn't be local (Mormons are pacifists...),
what do we know about the updated Daleks? They can fly. What else?
Not wanting to
wait for the BBC to find what we had already worked out for ourselves,
DalekWorld has had a look at Dalek Updates which should
have been added to make them better, more dangerous, and perhaps a
bit more cool.
For a start, Daleks
were a bit wobbly, and a bit slow-moving. The obvious way to fix this
is the approach taken by boy-racers and hot-rodders:
Let's
start with a "basic" Dalek model... |
We add speed-stripes
along the side.
We add those
little blue glowing LEDs which some people now put under their
cars, or on the wipers.
We add a
rear "spoiler", so that the Dalek looks extremely
cool - so long as the beholder is a geek.
We "chop"
the top off and
shorten the neck section, like the American hot-rods. This creates
a low-profile Dalek.
We consider
using a "active-air" pump sole system to allow the
Dalek to be a better sports professional.
Daleks can
now fly, but our experiments led us to try some other solutions
before the one chosen by the BBC designers....
And here
is what you get if you put the whole lot together...
| |
Other
weapons might be more effective than a gun. We have a few suggestions,
which we will add when they have been drawn and digitised...
The
plunger is apparently Hartnell's fault - he thought that the
grab (like the ones used in the movies) were potentially too
sharp to act right next to, and demanded a less "dangerous"
prop be susbstituted. We know what the "new" Dalek
was able to do with his plunger, and that wasn't exactly "safe"...
We have some other ideas for things which might work better...
